Liposuction

Liposuction or lipoplasty (also called suction lipectomy or liposculpture or fat suction) is a technique used for fat modeling. Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery done to reshape and remove excess fat from particular areas to improve the contouring of body, to enhance its proportions. Using liposuction, it is possible to increase your self-image. This procedure is usually used mainly for people whose body fat cannot be removed through exercise and dieting. In spite of being fit and reasonably healthy, there can be excess amount of fat in specific areas resulting in disproportionate contouring. This can be due to some hereditary factors or traits in the family. It may also be caused by not having control over your fitness level or body weight. Liposuction is usually done on different areas like face, neck, thighs, abdomen, buttocks, hips, chest, arms, knees calves, ankles and other areas.

Liposuction is sometimes done along with plastic surgery to do tummy-tucking, facelift or breast reduction. After doing liposuction because of the way your body has been contoured, it will give the appearance of losing more fat than the actual reality. The fat quantity that are removed depends on the methods used, doctors who perform liposuction and the patients’ preference. On an average, usually below 10 pounds are removed, as over suction is highly risky. If you remove too much fat it will look like dents or/and lumps.

Procedure

Liposuction is done by injecting a saline fluid, using a cannula or tube along with an aspirator (suction device) by making an incision. When you do liposuction it is necessary to have good health. Besides this, you must not take for a lengthy period, nicotine or any medications that do blood thinning like aspirin. After flushing the part with solution composed of lidocaine (an anesthetic), epinephrine (drug to constrict your blood vessels) along with the saline fluid. The cannula connected to a vacuum device is pushed in through the incision to break up your fat cells to draw it out from the body through suction.

Limitations Of Liposuction

  • Damage of skin or nerve
  • Blood clots
  • Fat clots
  • Loose or rippling skin
  • Irregular pigmentation
  • Contours turning up uneven
  • Scarring
  • Infection
  • Injury due to thermal burn from ultrasound
  • Hematoma/Bleeding
  • Persistent pain
  • Poor healing of wounds
  • Asymmetry
  • Risks of anesthesia
  • Accumulation or loss of fluid
  • Swelling or discoloration of skin
  • Complications of cardiac and pulmonary area
  • Skin sensation altered.
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Revision surgery is a possibility
  • Leg swellings that persist

Liposuction is good for some body sites like outer thighs, as well as the abdomen. But it does not give too much improvement for face, inner thighs and arms. Liposuction will only enhance your appearance. It will not protect you from diabetes or any cardiac diseases, as there are no metabolic benefits. Liposuction does not shrink fat cells, but only removes some, whereas dieting does it and hence causes less damage. It is the visceral fat, which cause inflammation and raises glucose, as well as lipids.
