Drugs That Cause Weight Loss

Drugs that are used for weight loss are generally called anorexiants. All the drugs are potentially effective when it is not used properly and with additional weight loss measures including exercise and behavioral modification. Most medicines lost their effectiveness overtime thus requiring increased dosage and they can be addictive and dangerous. None of these drugs deals with the underlying problems that may cause obesity. Under the guidance of doctor people should use non drug methods for losing weight. Many have seen obesity drugs as an effective way to lose weight. Studies have suggested however, that the drugs may be more successful in maintaining weight loss rather than promoting weight loss.

There are currently nine weight loss drugs on the market. Most work by suppressing the appetite. While many hope to have a quick fix, results have shown that lifestyles changes first followed by the use of the pill is most productive.

Common weight-loss drugs

Two prescription drugs have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for long-term weight loss. These drugs work in different ways and cause different side effects.

Drug How it works Typical initial dosage Common side effects
Sibutramine (Meridia) Changes your brain chemistry, making you feel full more quickly 10 milligrams (mg) once a day Increased blood pressure, headache, dry mouth, constipation and insomnia
Orlistat (Xenical) Prevents the absorption of fat in your intestines 120 mg three times a day Frequent oily bowel movements, diarrhea, bloating and abdominal pain

Though not prescribed as often, several medications, such as phentermine (Adipex-P, Ionamin), are approved for short-term use. These drugs suppress appetite, but haven't been the subject of many long-term studies. When used for a short time — generally less than 12 weeks — the medications usually lead to only temporary weight loss. Side effects of these drugs include dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and lightheadedness.

Weight reduction medications are not designed for trivial or cosmetic weight loss. They are designed to help obese patients as part of an overall weight management program. They should not be used as a substitute for healthy eating and exercise. On the contrary all clinical weight loss trials show that obesity drugs are only effective when used in combination with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Weight loss pharmaceuticals can be effective, but only when combined with proper diet and exercise. Actual weight loss varies from patient to patient but average weight loss losses about fifteen to twenty pounds in excess of that achieved with non drug diet and exercise treatments might be expected during the course of one to two years. Before making any decision about using prescription pills to lose weight, you should consult your doctor for a full explanation of your options. When choosing a particular weight loss medication, ask for a full list of known side effects. Obesity drugs are not safe weight management option for all patients, so get as much as information as you can before making any decision.
